- ➤ An iconic painting called Piasa Bird sits on a riverside bluff in Alton and dates back to French explorers in the 1600s. The original image was lost in the 1840s from quarrying, and it was later repainted and became a local legend (its name comes from a story about a water panther) featured on school mascots and community items. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ John Michel, owner of Marco’s Express Restaurant in Swansea and a retired Air Force general, is expanding his Currency of Caring program to offer free meals to Scott Air Force Base personnel and local residents amid the ongoing government shutdown. The initiative has provided 700—1000 meals so far and will continue every Friday with support from local food trucks and a food bank. First Alert 4
