ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two workers died on Aug. 7 when a helicopter crashed while working on power lines near the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in Alton—emergency crews reached the site by boat amid heavy smoke.  Riverbender

CULTURE NEWS

  • After five years of repairs prompted by guest feedback, Six Flags St. Louis reopened its historic Grand Ole Carousel today—an attraction built in 1915 that now features 68 horses, with two available for guest-named entries via a QR code contest.  KSDK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Senator Christopher Belt announced that 24 Metro East school districts will receive over $6 million in additional evidence-based funding through a new state formula that considers enrollment and special needs — the extra funds will help support quality education in local areas including Belleville.  Riverbender

HEALTH NEWS

  • A GoFundMe campaign launched to support Belleville-area Christine Rejniak covers her medical expenses after a cancer diagnosis—she is a devoted mother and caregiver known for her community contributions. On July 30, she was reported to need surgery, radiation and intravenous chemotherapy—additional tests are scheduled for the second week of August.  Riverbender
  • Gary Chronister, a former Missouri inmate, is asking for help on his GoFundMe page to pay for urgent medical needs and keep his home as he battles advanced liver cirrhosis from untreated hepatitis C — which he said he caught in prison. He updated his page on August 1 and said every small donation helps him stay afloat.  Riverbender
