Good morning, Belleville. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Joshua Javon Morrison, 35, was charged with aggravated arson, arson, aggravated battery and a hate crime after he allegedly set a fire at an apartment complex on the 300 block of Grant Street in Bethalto on July 19th — he reportedly damaged a Nissan Rogue and struck a victim causing several fractures — while a court filing seeks an evaluation of his fitness to stand trial.  First Alert 4

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the O'Fallon Township High School marching band joined pop band AJR on stage at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater as the group finished their song 'Weak.' EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the request of the St. Louis Zoo, the SIUE Center for Crime Science and Violence Prevention began work in April on a virtual reality simulation that shows how caretakers feed and care for animals in the new Wildcare Park barns in North St. Louis County — Logan Holland, Manas Das, and Dennis Mares used CAD drawings and images to replicate the barn textures and pulley system. The simulation will be finalized by fall to give young visitors a close look at the process of animal care.  Riverbender

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Mike Bost said the new federal budget will fund upgrades at three veterans hospitals, including John Cochran and Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis and a facility in Marion. The planned improvements will add a new anesthesia room and repair the energy plant at Cochran, boost the emergency surgical ward and data center at Jefferson Barracks, and update the ICU and health-record system at the Marion hospital—steps that aim to improve care for veterans.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
