- ➤ Baldwin, a local researcher from Alton, has spent years studying Underground Railroad sites and civil rights history after a chance funeral conversation in 2017 led him to uncover hidden landmarks and detailed archive records. A state commission will review hundreds of potential sites + work to preserve key landmarks like Arbuckle Cemetery as vital parts of the region’s past. St. Louis Post-Dispatch
