Sen. Durban visited Cahokia Heights today and announced that phase one of the sewer project is complete—federal funds helped fix longstanding issues after the city reached a settlement over alleged Clean Water Act and Illinois Environmental Protection Act violations.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he supports peaceful protests and condemned strong-arm tactics after U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a press conference on immigration protests.
Durbin, who was in St. Clair County on Friday to mark sewer and flooding work in Cahokia Heights (paid for with federal funds amounting to $13.5 million), urged protesters to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully as Missouri’s National Guard stands ready.
A 3.5-mile stretch of Interstate 255 in Cahokia Heights and Sauget will reopen by 6 p.m. today, weather permitting—more than six weeks ahead of schedule, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.
