ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Illinois State Police said a driver lost control on I-255 near Forest Boulevard at 5:30 a.m.—he struck a bridge support and died at the scene, and police are investigating the cause while the left lane remains closed.  KSDK

CRIME NEWS

  • Allen Lalk, a Metro East youth hockey coach and Uber driver, was shot in the face during a carjacking in Columbia Saturday and lost an eye—police said—after two suspects, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old, attempted to steal his vehicle.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
  • A swastika mowed into a residential lawn in Alhambra sparked an investigation by Grand Fork police and the city attorney to determine if the act was a hate crime+ community members say the symbol does not reflect the town's values amid rising hate incidents.  First Alert 4
  • At a Village Board meeting, Swansea Police honored Sgt. Erin Huff and Officer Derek Schackmann for their lifesaving response on May 16th— they gave emergency care to a stabbing victim in a domestic incident and helped Belleville Police transport the victim to the hospital— for their professional actions.  Riverbender

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a stretch of I-55/70 in Madison County will be closed on June 13—affecting the east and northbound lanes between Route 157 and Route 159—for storm-related bridge repairs. The work will end on June 30.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, June 3, the Edwardsville Tigers won a 7-6 sectional semifinal softball game against the Belleville East Lancers in Mascoutah (they scored the final run on the last play). They will face Bradley Bourbonnais in the sectional final on Friday at 4:30 in Normal.  Riverbender
  • Belleville West junior Jayln Cole won the Illinois 110-meter high hurdles state championship on May 31 with a time of 13.82 seconds at the meet in Charleston—he reached his goal of breaking 14 seconds and will now focus on preparing for national competitions.  Riverbender
