- ➤ This weekend brings many local events for residents to enjoy. Today a free Midwest Express concert with Mattie Schell & Jackson Stokes takes place at City Center Park in Jerseyville, while the Alton Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market opens on Saturday and more family-friendly and cultural gatherings are planned in Belleville and nearby areas. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday at 12:30 p.m., two men fleeing police after an armed robbery call died when their speeding pickup truck ran a red light and hit a turning tractor-trailer in Sauget—one man was from Dupo and the other was from Cahokia Heights—causing a fire. St. Louis Post-Dispatch
- ➤ Police responded to a 911 call at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday for an armed robbery on Cahokia Street in Sauget and later saw a speeding GMC pickup truck that crashed into a tractor trailer on Route 3—killing both the driver at the scene and the passenger at the hospital. KSDK
- ➤ Drivers in Belleville may receive a scam text claiming the Illinois DMV says they have an unpaid ticket and that their license and registration will be suspended if they do not pay; officials warn that real notices come by mail (with weeks to respond) and advise verifying details by calling the Secretary of State at (217) 785-3000. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The St. Clair County Transit District announced today it received $3 million from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program to fund Phase 2 of the Bunkum Road Trail in Belleville. The 0.8-mile bike path will include a large pedestrian bridge over I-64 and will connect residents to the MetroBikeLink System through six Metro Transit Centers. Riverbender
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Belleville East won three to one over Collinsville in the Class 4A playoff on May 28 at Blazier Field with key hits from Grady Davis, Tommy Kramkowski and Brody Lindemann and a complete game by Kramkowski. Other teams advanced in regional baseball playoffs such as O’Fallon, Teutopolis, Triad, Highland and Mascoutah—setting up finals later this weekend. Riverbender
- ➤ Carrollton beat Okawville 10-0 on May 28 and now is 34-1 as they prepare to face the host Warriors in today’s 4:30 p.m. sectional final in Class 1A—Carterville overcame Red Bud 3-1 to advance to a Saturday final at 12 noon in Class 2A while Belleville West won its regional semifinal 15-0 over Granite City, with Kara Kramer recording three hits and four RBIs, and will meet Belleville East at 11 a.m. Saturday in Class 4A.
