ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ameren Illinois filed a request to raise residential gas rates by about $9 per month to pay for pipeline upgrades — consumer groups say the planned boost in allowed profit to 10.7% is too high. State regulators will decide by December — and the utility plans to seek another rate increase next year.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Nikki Budzinski and Rep. Young Kim wrote to VA Secretary Doug Collins on Tuesday to urge continued research into how military service affects female veterans. They said female veterans face challenges including sexual trauma, toxic exposures that affect their reproductive health, and pressures as caregivers.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Bullet Related Injury Clinic lost its $2 million federal grant on April 22, which forced a hiring freeze even though the center has removed over 200 bullets from gun violence victims since 2020. Dr. LJ Punch said nearly 1,000 patients have received care at the clinic & a mobile unit is planned for this Summer.  KSDK
  • Kristina Sandidge, a local Mental Health First Aid instructor, explained warning signs of suicide such as sudden behavior changes (like researching ways to die) and advised speaking directly with anyone showing these signs. She emphasized that calling 988 for help is crucial and that people should dial 911 if there is immediate danger.  Riverbender

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Belleville East Lancers won 15-0 over Collinsville in softball at the Collinsville Sports Complex with Ashlyn Willis recording two hits and four RBIs. In soccer at Bob Goalby Field, Belleville West beat Belleville East 6-1—Emerson Morris scored twice and added two assists as his team claimed the three points.  Riverbender
  • After a 7—0 loss on May 13, Belleville East baseball played strong defense but struggled with hitting, and coach Wiggs said the team is preparing for a rematch with Edwardsville today at 4:30 p.m. as they aim to gain momentum in upcoming games against Triad on Friday and Collinsville next Tuesday for a shot at the conference championship.  Riverbender
