COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 2,000 people filled the Cathedral of St. Peter yesterday for a two-hour ordination and installation ceremony that saw Bishop Godfrey (formerly Father Godfrey Mullen) assume his role as the diocese's 10th bishop following his appointment by Pope Leo XIV.  KSDK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Miriam High School completed a new internship program that allowed them to gain hands-on skills at Mueller Furniture in Fairview Heights; coordinators plan to expand the initiative next year (offering more real-world job opportunities).  KSDK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP eligibility changes took effect on May 1, imposing work, volunteer, or school requirements that may reduce benefits for many local residents. In Belleville, the Gateway Food Pantry has added a weekly evening service and a new delivery system for those with disabilities (to help meet rising needs).  KSDK
  • IDOT will reduce the eastbound lanes to two (from Illinois Route 203 to Exchange Avenue) and close the ramp from I-64 to I-55/70 at 6 a.m. Monday for bridge maintenance; drivers should expect delays until the lanes reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.  First Alert 4

  • Dr. Angie Harris at Belleville Memorial Hospital advises patients with spring allergies to start over the counter medications early as shifting weather may trigger symptoms. She offers simple guidance to help manage discomfort.  Riverbender

  • In a 6-1 win on Thursday afternoon, the Tigers swept Belleville East as McCutchen and Wampler each had two hits and an RBI while Eberlin struck out five in five innings at the ballpark.  Riverbender
