CRIME NEWS

  • Erick M. Buntyn, 35, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony for threatening to kill a judge and jurors after a conviction in a crash that severed a teenager’s legs—he received two years' probation and a suspended two-year sentence—he faces up to seven years in prison if he violates probation.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
  • Nine individuals were charged with federal immigration-related offenses in Effingham, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties—U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft said eight were repeat offenders and the charges ranged from illegal reentry to firearms possession, all part of Operation Take Back America.  Riverbender

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bishop Michael McGovern held a memorial Mass Monday night at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville to honor Pope Francis, who died Monday morning. He invited local faith leaders to join the service — sharing heartfelt memories and praise for the pontiff's call for simplicity and unity.  KSDK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Father McGivney Catholic High School in Glen Carbon will hold a blessing ceremony for its new track and field facilities and a prayer vigil—honoring beloved Coach Brandon Ahring—to remember his service. The event will allow the school community to reflect on his lasting impact.  Riverbender

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down near Madonnaville at about 8:07 p.m. on Easter Sunday and traveled northeast to hit Waterloo High School before dissipating. Survey crews were deployed Monday morning—using field checks to assess damage—to verify the tornado event.  KSDK
