The State of Illinois African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission will hold a public hearing in Belleville at Southwestern Illinois College on Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to gather public recommendations on reparatory actions for Black Americans whose ancestors experienced chattel slavery — speakers will explain issues like housing segregation, unequal education, racism in environment and infrastructure, and an unjust legal system.
Today, Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded more than $19 million to 38 recipients serving nearly 1,900 community members statewide to expand the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program—providing tuition-free training, stipends, and certification that help participants qualify for registered construction apprenticeships.
