COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Belleville diocese announced Monday that Pope Francis appointed Bishop Michael McGovern as the next archbishop of Omaha, replacing George Lucas who served since 2009. McGovern, a Chicago native, will be installed on May 7 at the Cathedral of St. Cecilia — he said he looks forward to learning more about the ministries he will support.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Neighborhood kids in Swansea saw smoke coming from a home and called 911; police rushed to Marla Kay Drive—breaking the garage door to rescue a trapped man while fire crews contained the damage to the kitchen and he is expected to make a full recovery.  KSDK

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rebecca Losli, President of Illinois American Water, addressed the ASCE 2025 Report Card that gave water a grade of C minus and wastewater a grade of D plus—she said the report shows America’s water systems have seen no improvement in four years. She added that Illinois must boost investments in critical water infrastructure amid plans to invest between $40 and $42 billion nationally and increase capital spending that supported thousands of jobs.  Riverbender

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Oliver, a Belleville man and convicted felon, was sentenced Monday to 240 months in prison after police caught him with a gun during a chase in Washington County—he led officers onto a route that reached Nashville.  First Alert 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers face delays on I‑55/70 as two westbound lanes between IL 203 and I‑64, closed since Monday for emergency bridge deck repairs, will reopen Wednesday afternoon while two eastbound lanes close at 6 a.m. today and reopen by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.  First Alert 4

HEALTH NEWS

  • Busey Bank is supporting Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation in financing its plan to purchase and renovate a building with four floors (59,425 square feet) in Belleville to expand healthcare services. The project will use federal and state New Markets Tax Credit programs to consolidate patient care and create new jobs as it marks the first step in SIHF's broader community revitalization effort.  Riverbender
