COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Belleville Police and Fire Departments played a basketball game at Belleville West High School to support Special Olympics Unified Schools in an event called the Battle of the Badges—ticket sales from the event benefited the program.  Riverbender
  • Today Tyre Sampson’s family opened a snack shop in Madison at 422 Madison Avenue to honor his memory three years after his death on an amusement park ride; the shop offers free food and giveaways during grand opening week and pledges 10% of profits to neighborhood initiatives—ensuring his legacy helps the community.  First Alert 4
  • A rainy morning did not stop runners at the Chain of Rocks Bridge 6K (held on March 24th) as they crossed the historic Mississippi River span and Route 66 to raise funds for the Jackie Joiner-Kersee Foundation to support young athletes.  First Alert 4

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chilean national known as Maryorie Fernandez-Ormeno—also known as Guadalupe Maldanado Salinas, 36—was charged in Glen Carbon with fraud and identity theft after she took a credit card in Edwardsville and used it to buy gift cards; she was deported on Oct. 2 and is also accused of coming back to the country illegally.  First Alert 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A promised $50 million for after-school programs remains unspent 10 months after Governor Pritzker signed the budget, leaving school districts and community organizations in East St. Louis facing possible program closures. State education officials say they are awaiting legislative intent while advocates warn that shutting these programs may force working families to struggle without safe after-school options.  KSDK

  • Carrollton's girls softball team improved to 4-0 after winning 12-7 on March 21 and 15-0 on March 22—key hitters contributed in both games—while girls soccer teams Naperville Central, Father McGivney and O'Fallon earned wins to start their seasons strongly.  Riverbender
