About this event

The Young Israel of St. Louis Cholent Cookoff is a community-building event centered around one of the great Ashkenazi Jewish comfort foods: cholent, the slow-cooked Shabbat stew traditionally prepared before Shabbat and enjoyed for lunch on Saturday.

It brings together members of the Young Israel community to share their own cholent recipes, compete for bragging rights, and enjoy good food and camaraderie. From traditional meat-and-bean cholent to creative variations with different spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques, each entry offers a taste of the cook’s personal approach to this Shabbat staple.

More than just a food competition, the cookoff celebrates Jewish tradition, the warmth of Shabbat, and the community spirit that makes Young Israel special.

The Young Israel of St. Louis Cholent Cookoff invites attendees to sample every cholent and vote for their favorite, with a lineup of community members and rabbis serving as chefs. $5 admission fee.
